Blogging Against Escalation in Iraq!

First off, let’s be really clear, I’m not anti-troop, nor against anything the troops and folks in harms way need to keep them safe and get them home. I AM against policies that I believe unnecessarily extend their time in harms way, increase the hazards to them and civilians in the areas concerned. I’m most definitely against President Bush’s continued ignorance of what the population of the nation he is supposed to be representing and serving thinks of his policies and actions.
.
That being said, the MoveOn organization is coordinating a massive Virtual March on Washington this Thursday, February 1st, 2007. The goal is to send 1 million messages to members of Congress, letting them know where WE stand on these issues before them. A number of prominent bloggers have already posted their stance and the links I’ll include in a moment to help folks sign up and spread the word.

This isn’t a plea for money. This is a plea for folks to tell their representatives what point of view they should be representing. A phone call or two is what is being asked for, and to help increase sucess and the impact, the link will take you to a web page that will help you sign up, choose a time to call that is less congested, giving us all a better shot at getting through quickly and making sure that our Congressmen and Congresswomen are impacted with calls all day long! Oh, and they’ll send you a reminder with your representative’s phone number and name too.

Science Fiction Museum and Hall of Fame

Bumped into a nifty site today, the Science Fiction Museum & Hall of Fame.  It covers a topic near and dear to my lil ole heart, science fiction. Yes, I love sci-fi. I have tons of books in my house, I’d have to say 1/2 to 3/4 of them are science fiction or related somehow. Of the movies I have on DVD or video cassette, it’s probably closer to 80% sci-fi. Yes, I can blurt out a little Klingon, yes, I wrote (semi-) scholarly papers on Blade Runner in college, and yes my oldest online “handle” is a mangled spelling (due to availability) of K’Ehleyr.

Frankly I was prepared to be disappointed with the site, as many times one finds rather amatuerish efforts on the end of promising links. Steeling myself against the possibility of a horrific midi star trek theme blurting out over screaming fixed background with rotating, blinking, cutesy graphics, I found myself looking at a rather nice-looking graphic and topics I found relevant. w00t! I say, wOOt!

The Hall of Fame inductees are a very relevant list of contributors, each with a headshot and compact, yet well-researched blurb. I enjoyed the musuem collection, a Darth Vadar production prop helmet, complete with visible wear and imperfections. The first time I got a good look at some real movie props in person, up close, I was quite surprised at how rough they are, the number of obvious “errors” one can see that either slip by at 24 frames a second or get cleaned up in post-production. It is great that the images here aren’t cleaned up, so that one can enjoy the reality/fiction divider, even by remote over the web.

Bitty lil site that gives the English transliteration of one’s Hebrew name. Couldn’t be easier!

As Madame is really a title, the closest would be “Mady or Madge” which becomes Levana or Margalit or Meira or Migdala or even Penina!
