Second Life ala China

Posted on March 1, 2007. Filed under: Blogging, Linkage & W(a/o)nderings, PR, Second Life, Technology, VR worlds |

Check out the link at the bottom of the article to a promotional video for a Second Life type VR world developed in parallel in China called HiPiHi Yes the voice over is in Chinese, and even if that’s not your language, believe me, you’ll understand. To my eyes it looks kinda like SL, There and maybe a lil Active Worlds/Sims flavoring thrown in.

Gee, if nothing else, the video is good for a seven minute game of “spot the copyright violation.” Such are the wages of Open Source, I suppose. (I’m not buying that they’ve been working on this since 2005.)

thanks for the link karma. =) the chinese surely are fast copycats..

@ Kam – Well to code something as complex as that appears to be (HiPiHi) and as I know Second Life to be, I don’t see that 3 years of development work to be all that far out of line. Think of it this way, how long do you think it would take to infest all those thousands and thousands of lines of code with all the lovely “features” we’ve come to know and “love” (read workaround) in SL as it stands today?

@ Bjornlee – Thanks for returning the good linkage! I think we’ll probably find that in the next few years a few Second Life-like places will pop up. Kinda like air planes or automobiles, once someone or a few someones figure out the initial hard part, a buncha other folks come along and run with it. Question is, will SL be Daimler or Wright Brothers? Someone that will hand in there for the long haul and keep up or be the instigator but be outstripped by those that follow?
